Amputee Makes History with APL’s Modular Prosthetic Limb
A Colorado man made history at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) this summer when he became the first bilateral shoulder-level amputee to wear and simultaneously control two of the Laboratory’s Modular Prosthetic Limbs. Most importantly, Les Baugh, who lost both arms in an electrical accident 40 years ago, was able to operate the system by simply thinking about moving his limbs, performing a variety of tasks during a short training period.

Applied Physics
The Sliders land on an Earth with a similar technology level to the one they just left. Dr Davis sets about trying to figure a way to separate the two Mallorys. She also has the unsettling experience of meeting herself in this new world. Beckett continues to struggle with the emotions of possibly losing her 'Mallory'.

Signal Acquisition of New Horizons Spacecraft
The New Horizons spacecraft "phoned home" around 9:00 p.m. EDT, July 14, 2015, indicating that it had successfully completed its historic flyby of Pluto earlier in the day. Team members at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, cheered as they received the flyby confirmation. The fastest spacecraft ever launched, New Horizons has traveled more time and distance – more than nine years and three billion miles ¬– than any space mission before, to reach Pluto.

Particle manipulation by a non-resonant acoustic levitator. Marco A. B. Andrade et al. (2015), Applied Physics Letter, http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4905130
We present the analysis of a non-resonant acoustic levitator, formed by an ultrasonic transducer and a concave reflector. In contrast to traditional levitators, the geometry presented herein does not require the separation distance between the transducer and the reflector to be a multiple of half wavelength. The levitator behavior is numerically predicted by applying a numerical model to calculate the acoustic pressure distribution and the Gor'kov theory to obtain the potential of the acou
